A fixed lathe steady rest, also known as a solid steady rest, is a type of steady rest that is designed to support a workpiece during turning operations on a lathe. Unlike a traveling steady rest, which can be moved along the bed of the lathe to support different sections of the workpiece, a fixed steady rest is stationary and supports only one section of the workpiece.

The purpose of a fixed steady rest is to prevent the workpiece from flexing or vibrating during the turning operation. This is particularly important when turning long and slender workpieces, such as shafts or pipes, that have a tendency to bend under the pressure of the cutting tool. The fixed steady rest provides additional support to the workpiece, allowing the machinist to make more accurate cuts and achieve a smoother surface finish.

Fixed steady rests are typically used in conjunction with other cutting tools, such as a lathe tool or drill, to produce complex shapes or features on the workpiece. By using a fixed steady rest, the machinist can maintain a consistent diameter along the length of the workpiece, ensuring that the finished product meets the required specifications.
